This is a response by Ahmed Alhasan to the statements of prominent Wahhabi Salafi scholars about Earth’s rotation. This excerpt is taken from Atheism Delusion.
Abdul Aziz Ibn Abdullah Ibn Baz¹ (1910-1999) was a Saudi Arabian Sunni scholar and a leading proponent of the Salafi form of Islam. He also received his Islamic education from Sunni Islamic scholars. Abdul Aziz Ibn Abdullah Ibn Baz said the same thing as Ibn Uthaymeen:
I also confirmed the article with some quotes from the scholar Ibn Al-Qayyim (may Allah [God] be Merciful to him) that give evidence to prove that the earth is round. As for the rotation of the earth, I have denied this and explained the evidence that confirms its falsehood, but I did not declare those who believe that it does to be Kafirs [disbelievers], but I do so for those who say that the sun is static and does not move. This is because saying so contradicts the explicit texts in the Quran and the authentic Sunnah, which confirm that the sun and the moon run on their courses (Binbaz.org.sa 1977).
It is clear that by saying the Sun moves, Ibn Baz is trying to say that it orbits Earth like the Moon does because he thinks that Earth is fixed in place and does not orbit. If that were the case, there would be no way for night and day to occur unless the Sun were to orbit the Earth.
Whoever is following these people and adopting their religion should reconsider. They claim that the idea of Earth orbiting the Sun is a rotten theory. It has now been shown to you that their statements and beliefs are what is rotten, so won’t you reconsider before it’s too late? Perhaps their claim that the vicegerency of God on His Earth does not continue after Muhammad, the Messenger of God pbuhaf, is just like their statement that the Earth never orbits the Sun. The Earth that Ibn Uthaymeen, Ibn Baz, and the Wahhabi scholars said does not orbit, is orbiting. Beware lest you discover on the Day of Resurrection—when regret is of no benefit to you—that the vicegerency of God on His Earth after the Messenger Muhammad pbuhaf, which Ibn Uthaymeen and Ibn Baz said is false is actually true, just as they got it backwards when they said the Sun orbits the Earth:
What is important regarding this matter is that we must believe that the Sun orbits the Earth and that the alternation of night and day is not caused by the Earth’s orbit, but by the Sun’s orbit of the Earth instead.
As for those of you who follow people like them, may God reform your condition. Beware, perhaps they have presented religion backward to you, just as they did with the Earth and the Sun. Here, I will conclude the discussion of the three well-known cases of Galileo, Earth’s orbit, and the Christian and Wahhabi men of religion. I simply ask the reader to keep these lessons in mind when we discuss the clerics’ opinions about evolution.
